Dashiki is a Yoruba word describing a men's
short sleeve tunic. It is the smallest member of the Agbada family (a type of
flowing wide sleeved robe, usually decorated with embroidery) and it is a
predominately worn by men in West Africa.
In popular culture however this
particular style and design of Dashiki which emerged in The 60s, and was
adopted into the "Hippie" culture was popular even until the early
80's. Adopted by men and women of different races, the classic Hippie Dashiki
features intricate patterns along the sleeves, neck, hem, and most times has
two front pockets in vibrant colours. Some variations have long sleeves,
elastic at the waist line, belts, hoods and some are even made into kaftan worn
by women.
In recent times it has emerged again with its
classic detailing and tunic like silhouette. Not much about this iconic garment
has changed which is maybe why its trend has endured through the years. Its re-emergence
into popular culture is more than welcome.
Celebrities have also taken to its liking and
have been seen wearing different designs off it and some performing artists
have even made it more mainstream by wearing them in their musical videos.
That been said, the Danshiki is the trendiest
casual wear at the moment. So dash out and get your very own Danshiki!
